Over the past few weeks our class has been working in MIT App Inventor, coding and inventing android apps. We follow instructions to code but some of out we have to figure out our self. At first, I was not interested in coding games but now it’s not so bad. It’s easier than I thought it was. Basically there are these blocks and you just put in “when___” “Do___” and it’s almost as simple as that but the words are a little more complicated and you have to know where to put what blocks. I like coding and I enjoy doing it in class now. After doing PLTW , I think of a bunch of famous games on the app store that are just like the ones we created in class. I think to myself “I could make that app and get money too!”.
Since Thanksgiving I have been working with classmates on the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) computer science course and have so far created multiple apps like paintpot, an app where you can take pictures and draw on them, I Have A Dream, an app that plays Dr.King’s famous I Have A Dream Speech, and most recently a survey app called Count me in. I’ve realized in creating these apps the challenges that major programmers take. Although the apps I created were relatively simple, through them I saw the challenges of creating a game like those I see today. Many games I play have a 3 dimensional space to move around in as well as objects to interact with, like pulling something raises a gate, or hitting something causes it to fall. I didn’t find the apps we were making especially challenging, but through them I have the basic ideas to build more complicated apps, still nowhere near the code the games i play use but still more complicated. During a conversation I was having with my teacher Mr.Patel the game The Last Guardian came up. This is one of the more recent games I’ve seen but apparently it’s been in work for 8 years, 6 of those were spent creating the incredible AI mind of Trico, the giant cat looking character through a maze of old ruins with dizzying drops and puzzles that aren’t too troubling, though the game doesn't tell you where to go the AI will often try to help you with many of the puzzles. Although creating games like this is a long way off from what we’re doing, I hope that by starting here might teach me the basics so that I could go on to make games like that instead of just using them.Last Guardian cover. |
